Built for CloudCompare

CloudCompare is active open-source, GPL-licensed software for processing point clouds and triangular meshes. Clouds can hold XYZ coordinates, colors, normals, and multiple per-point scalar fields. Meshes use triangles indexed into a cloud and may carry normals, materials, and UV coordinates. It is not CAD or a DCC material renderer.

  • Finish the technical decision before preparing a flat presentation image.
  • Upload one finished PNG or JPEG from Render to File.
  • Keep clouds, meshes, scalar fields, sections, and measurements in CloudCompare.
  • Review each presentation image beside the original technical export.

When to use RENDERCAD with CloudCompare

Build the evidence in CloudCompare first. Register overlapping entities, compute the needed cloud-to-cloud or cloud-to-mesh distance, complete segmentation, and extract slices or sections before preparing a presentation image.

Scalar fields can be color-scaled, filtered, and thresholded. An absolute scale keeps mapping consistent across related views. Retain the relevant range and legend when values need context, then isolate the entities that support the discussion.

RENDERCAD sees pixels only: it cannot register, recompute, segment, verify, or measure. Generated imagery may alter geometry, colors, legends, labels, or apparent defects, so compare it with the untouched technical export and keep the original analysis authoritative.

Finish registration, distance calculations, segmentation, and section work in CloudCompare. Select the needed entities, active scalar field, and color scale, then decide whether readers need the legend or labels.

Choose Display > Render to File, set the resolution zoom, and save PNG or JPEG. Overlays are omitted by default unless requested, so check every necessary label and legend. Retain a clean reference copy.

Upload the flat bitmap; there is no plugin or native CloudCompare ingest. Ask for clearer hierarchy, calmer framing, or report-cover context, then compare the result with the original image.

Direct one visible adjustment

Mark an area and describe the emphasis. The edit changes pixels, not point IDs, scalar calibration, mesh topology, materials, UVs, labels, or the entity tree. Keep the untouched reference beside the edited version.

Explore a presentation direction

After analysis, try a restrained report, stakeholder, or proposal treatment. Clearly preserve the scan silhouette, active color scale, and visible location of the finding. Reject changes that make the result harder to read.

Analysis and presentation stay distinct

CloudCompare holds coordinates, transforms, sensors, metadata, camera, numeric results, and editable analysis objects. RENDERCAD turns a flattened view into presentation imagery. Return there whenever a value needs checking.

Prepare the analytical frame

Show the needed cloud, mesh, slice, envelope, contour, or comparison field. Set the color range and camera, then confirm required legends and labels appear in the export. For repeated views, keep the same camera and absolute scale so the colors remain comparable.

Send the PNG or JPEG through the browser or desktop capture app. Both provide flat pixels; neither opens a CloudCompare project, reads native entities, or adds a plugin. Check the saved overlays before upload.

CloudCompare presentation questions

CloudCompare registration, analysis, export, and flat-image presentation

Use at least three point pairs for Align. ICP is fine registration, so begin with rough alignment and enough overlap before composing the view. After ICP, inspect the alignment in CloudCompare rather than judging it from a presentation image.

Cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-mesh distances become scalar fields. The approximate preview is not final until Compute. Cloud-to-mesh distances can be signed when applicable. Save the computed field and its display range before preparing the flat view.

Choose the active field, scale, and useful filter or threshold. Use an absolute scale for consistent mapping, retaining its legend and range for context. When comparing several exports, keep that absolute scale unchanged unless the review question changes.

Interactive segmentation uses a screen polygon or rectangle. Cross Section uses a clipping box and can export slices, envelopes, and contours before bitmap export. Choose the tool based on whether you need a selected region or repeated section geometry.

Use Display > Render to File, choose PNG or JPEG, and set the resolution zoom. Request overlays when needed, then check legends and labels. Open the saved image at delivery size to confirm small numbers and color transitions remain readable.

Upload a flat PNG or JPEG, not a project, cloud, mesh, or plugin package. Native format availability can differ by build and plugin. Make the raster only after the native analysis is complete and saved.

A flat image may show labels, legends, and values, but only as pixels. It does not preserve CloudCompare's editable data: coordinates, point IDs and scalar arrays, topology, materials, transforms, georeferencing, sensors, section geometry, metadata, camera parameters, or underlying numeric results.

Compare the scan outline, section position, color mapping, legend, labels, and visible condition side by side for unintended changes. If any of these move or change meaning, return to the reference instead of approving the presentation version.
